Custom Test Solutions
For unusual or highly challenging test requests, Field Evaluation Services, Inc. develops tailored real-world solutions. Many custom programs are executed within TreadSight™ tire wear testing, while certain durability and impact services are delivered as standalone evaluations.
Two categories of custom programs
Custom programs fall into two clearly defined categories: TreadSight™ tire wear testing, which follows our cycle-based tread wear measurement framework, and non-tread durability, impact, or exposure testing, which addresses robustness, damage, or environmental exposure questions outside of tread wear evaluation.
-
TreadSight™ based custom wear programs
Custom environments or mechanisms measured using structured tread wear methods. -
Standalone durability & impact/pothole
Bead/sidewall durability and impact/pothole simulation delivered outside the wear framework.
Data delivery approach
When custom programs fit best
- Mechanism specific learning
When the real-world mechanism is not captured by a standard route. - Challenging warranty / field issues
When the objective is to replicate a failure mode or usage pattern defensibly. - Decision timing
When program design must align with engineering schedules and milestone decisions.
Representative custom solutions
Below are common examples. Each program is scoped to the engineering question and can be executed at our facility or via Remote Support Units where road access allows (United States and Canada).
BB-4K Bead / Sidewall Durability
Field Evaluation Services, Inc. is the only private company offering a Bead Trailer, known as BB1-4K. This custom-designed gooseneck trailer was engineered without a suspension, ensuring that all road impacts are absorbed by the tire, effectively testing the bead and sidewall performance for PCR, LTR, SUV, and STR tires. Additionally, STR tire tread wear and durability testing is available. Field Evaluation Services, Inc. offers trailers with load ranges from 5,000 to 14,000 lbs.
- Load capability
Loading up to 4,000 lbs. per wheel position. - Mechanism focus
Bead/sidewall durability and impact related behavior. - Safety in mind
CNC machined steel bars, providing substantial weight with a low center of gravity.
TIMCA7 Impact & Pothole Simulation
Field Evaluation Services, Inc. designed and constructed a mobile, height adjustable curb specifically for impact and pothole simulation testing. Tires undergo shearography then sectioned as necessary for further analysis.
-
Configurable top block and height
Selectable rounded or straight top block with adjustable height up to seven inches. - Digital documentation
High speed video captures the impact. - Impact documentation
Tires are marked in 45° segments and numbered, with paint strips being used to indicate impact locations.
Low Speed High Scrub Wear Testing
Low speed high scrub testing conducted on a dedicated VDA pad in the Palm Springs area. When the objective is tread wear under high scrub conditions, this is measured using the TreadSight™ tire wear measurement framework (cycle based tread wear data).
- TreadSight™ measurement
Measured using a structured measurement book / framework (cycle based). - Application fit
Used in programs targeting high scrub mechanisms (e.g., spread axle / refuse applications). - Engineering visibility
Wear progression review across cycles rather than end of test.
OHV / Off-Road & Mixed Surface Programs
We maintain access to a range of public and private use lands in Southern California for off highway vehicle (OHV) testing. When a program requires a specific region, Remote Support Units enable execution elsewhere in the United States or Canada where road.
- Tread wear measurement
Off-road wear programs can be measured and trended cycle by cycle. - Terrain variety
Desert / wash / mixed terrain environments (program dependent). - Remote capable
Programs can be provisioned with connectivity options when cellular coverage is limited.
Real-world component field evaluation
We also support real-world component field testing when the program objective goes beyond tread wear measurement. Programs are structured for traceability and engineering review under true service exposure.
- In service reality
Duty cycle, operating environment, and real exposure, not assumptions. - Independent reporting
Documentation and defensible outputs suitable for engineering workflows.
Data delivery built for real decisions
Wear programs preserve cycle based visibility; durability/impact services provide mechanism focused outputs. The scope is made explicit so engineering teams know exactly what the outputs represent.
- Clear scope
What is measured, and what the results mean. - Cycle updates
Measurement cycle updates typically uploaded within hours of completed cycle. - Secure delivery
Secure portal delivery aligned with engineering workflows.
